Description of SmCo Magnets
· A samarium–cobalt (SmCo) magnet, a type of rare-earth magnet, is a strong permanent magnet made of an alloy of samarium and cobalt. SmCo is arguably the best permanent magnet material commercially available, with remanence similar to neodymium magnets but with higher temperature ratings and superior temperature stability. There are two types of SmCo magnets, SmCo 1:5 and SmCo 2:17. Both types of SmCo magnets are manufacture by powder metallurgy.
· SmCo is resistant to high temperatures and highly coercive, and very stable over a wide temperature range. This allows the field generated by SmCo magnets to remain relatively constant even after being exposed to numerous heating and cooling cycles.
Characters Of SmCo Magnets
· High resistance to demagnetization
· High energy (magnetic strength is strong for its size)
· Good to the moderately high-temperature stability
· Pricing for SmCo magnets is market sensitive
Surface Treatments
· No special surface treatments are required for SmCo magnets since they are resistant to oxidation. They can, however, be easily plated using a variety of metals, such as nickel or chrome
· It can also be coated as NdFeB magnets if needed
